I have a confession: I failed the CFA Level II exam the first time I sat for it. Back then, they only gave the CFA Level II exam once per year, so I had to wait until the next June to retake it. This level has a typical pass rate greater than 50%, but the number of people who sit for the exam is usually CFA Exam Pass Rates.

It’s 100% possible to do asset management internships (or hedge fund internships ), take the CFA , and recruit for one of these large funds – assuming it’s open to undergrads. So, while a traditional IB background at a top bank helps, you don’t necessarily need it if you start early or get relevant experience elsewhere.

It’s like the downsides of studying for the CFA : The certification won’t hurt you, but it’s not necessarily worth the time and money required. Also, completing a spring week mostly helps when applying to one specific bank for the same role.
